The Current Job Situation The current unemployment rate is 10.0. As if that were not bad enough, the unemployment rate is expected to continue to be between 10.0 and 11.0 during 2010. It is hard for most people to find work. Among the hardest hit demographic are recent college graduates and graduating college students. They are finding it increasingly difficult to find a position commensurate with their college training. Faced with no employment or the prospects of a job that does not pay at the level they expected with their education, recent graduates are faced with a number of difficult realities. First, they have student loans that they cannot meet. Many recent graduates face debt in the tens of thousands of dollars. Without an adequate income they will not be able to make necessary monthly payments on their school loans. This may result in interest, penalties and fines as well as poor credit scores that will later affect their ability to rent an apartment, to buy or lease a car, and to obtain financing should they try to start a new business. Second, they cannot afford health insurance. Although it appears that everyone will soon be mandated to purchase health insurance it may simply not be feasible for unemployed recent graduates to do so without subsidies from the government. Until they are mandated many will simply go without. Even though young people in their twenties tend, as a whole, to require much less medical care than older individuals, there are always some who succumb to life-threatening diseases such as cancer, others who develop conditions that are expensive to treat (such as diabetes), and others who suffer serious and even catastrophic injuries (such as can occur in motor vehicle accidents). Third, many recent graduates are being forced to move back in with their parents. This is not only an imposition (physical as well as economic) on the parents but it also means that recent graduates are not renting apartments or buying property. This will contribute to a real estate market that is having difficulty rebounding.
Over time we will post announcements of job opportunities on
this website. If you are aware of any such opportunities,
especially for positions for recent graduates, please
